BMX bikes are sized in two ways, first is the wheel size, which is typically 20″. The second is the frame size, which is determined by the toptube length. The best toptube length is chosen by the riders height.
Standard BMX Bike Sizing
All standard BMX bikes use 20″ wheels, and the sizing is determined by the riders height and the frames toptube length. There are also BMX bikes with smaller wheels designed for children, as well as speciality BMX bikes with larger wheel sizes.

Children’s BMX Bike Sizing
Children’s BMX bikes use wheel sizes ranging from 12″ to 18″, and are typically ridden by ages 2 to 12 depending on their height.

Specialty BMX Bike Sizing
Although not considerered a traditional BMX bike, there are BMX inspired bikes using larger wheel sizes. These may be ridden in a more casual way or for riders who can’t find a comfortable traditional BMX bike.

Tips
If the rider is still growing, you may want to consider going up in size slightly. The exact size, fit, and feel of a bike can always be fine tuned with changing the frame, fork, handlebars, cranks, or stem. Some experienced riders may even chose a longer or shorter toptube length based on personal preference and feel. This guide is not intended for BMX racing or flatland bikes.
